Obituary for Mahlon Dale Amstutz

November 5, 1929 – September 8, 2022

 

Mahlon D. Amstutz, age 92, died peacefully in his sleep while in hospice care for multiple chronic health problems. He was a devoted husband and father and a dedicated educator in Jeffco Public Schools.

Mahlon was born in Kidron OH, the 3rd child of Paul N. Amstutz and Esther (Bixler) Amstutz. He graduated from Goshen College in 1952 where he met his wife Julia (Judy) R. Ebersole. He began his teaching career, in Pueblo, CO where he taught for two years before attending graduate school at the University of Northern Colorado. The Amstutz’ssettled in Lakewood, CO where Mahlon taught at Lumberg Elementary and served as the principal at Eiber, Prospect Valley and Belmar Elementary Schools in Jefferson County for 28 years. Mahlon was also self-employed as an independent painting contractor for many years. Following his retirement, he served on the Board of the Jeffco Schools Credit Union, participated in the mission and leadership of First Mennonite Church of Denver, and donated over 50 gallons of blood through Bonfils Blood Center. Mahlon and Judy also enjoyed traveling and singing with the Columbine Chorale. He and Judy had 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandson.

Mahlon was preceded in death by his parents, his 2 brothers and 1 sister, his wife Judy and son Rodney. He is survived by his sister Adeline Yoder; his daughters Lynn Amstutz(Charlie Ferguson), Lori Campbell, and Rita Sommers; daughter-in-law Beatrix Schowalter Amstutz; grandchildren Phillip, Frederick, Cara, Bethany, Sarah, and Tristan; his great grandchild Harlan; and many nieces and nephews.

We treasure his legacy of service to his family, his church and community. He is sorely missed! A Celebration of Life service is planned for November 5, 2022, at 2:00 PM at First Mennonite Church of Denver.
