I lost a close friend in December. I†™ve known Thom for more than thirty years. He was an extraordinary human being. First and foremost, he was an incredibly talented artist. My first full appreciation of that was when we were vacationing at a beach house with the Misiak†™s and others. While some of us were fashioning crude castles in the sand, Thom was sculpting a dragon†™s foot, complete with gnarled knuckles and fierce claws. He also had a quick wit, a good nature and a great sense of humor. Thom and Sue enjoyed life to the fullest, and my wife Mary Ann and I were along on many of their adventures, whether they involved biking in the New Hampshire mountains, kayaking in Alaska or roaming through word-class cities. Of course, with their unbounded energy, they always left us in the dust, but we kept up as best we could. Thom and I often hoisted a beer or two while enjoying or discussing our mutual interests in jazz and Ohio State sports. Our last encounter with Sue and Thom was spending a week last September at the beautiful mountain house that they loved so much. Thom was in pretty bad health at the time, but his wit and positive attitude were unscathed. We also got a first-hand look at Sue†™s incredible devotion (not to mention physical strength) in helping Thom during trying times. I will miss Thom terribly.
