I was blessed to meet Brian and his beautiful wife Connie and son Brett last summer in Maine. What a fun week it was with games and lobster, and Brian’s sense of humor. He will truly be missed by so many, and especially his lifelong friend Luther Kloth. My deepest condolences to Brian’s family. May God strengthen you during these difficult times.

Brian Rich was one of the most amazing people I've gotten to know in my 52 spins around the sun. Getting to know him as a father, grandfather, educator, storyteller, Mainer, lobster-hypnotizer, song and dance man, and just all around wonderful human was my honor. I had the privilege of helping him produce his memoirs during the pandemic, and getting to see that deeply into a life so rich, and so full of human connection and vivaciousness was one of my favorite experiences, ever.
There are two days that always come to mind when I think of him. The day I met him, I had to step in and sing a song in his stead at a wedding he was officiating. He just didn't feel that he had the breath control to belt out that Nat King Cole tune. I was terrified to attempt such a thing, and tried to get him to sing it several times. He told me to do it, and was so gracious - oh, and yes, he did have a couple of notes for me before performing. =) This was my on-ramp to the world of Brian Rich. I also often think the 24th O'Rich'inal Golf Tournament. I got to play in his foursome, and that day changed my life forever. Seeing him in his element, and having him invite me into that circle was a thing that I still don't know how to properly thank him for. He loved his people, and his people loved him. And he knew, well, everybody!
Brian and Connie were at our home for the Super Bowl, and we're so glad that we got that time together. There was celebrating, complaining about referee's calls, sharing of food, and when they headed out - everyone got a hug and some personal words. I take solace in the last words that we exchanged were, "I love you, buddy."
If we each live half the life that Brian Rich lived, we will be lucky. He was one of a kind. His impact will be forever felt, and he'll be celebrated every day.

I’m sure many former students can say amazing things about Mr. Rich, but I wanted to share how special my bond was with him. When I was just a little kindergartener I told Mr. Rich that I was born in Ellsworth, Maine. We would talk about lighthouses and how I would love to go back and visit someday. He shared photos and paintings with me over the years and he never forgot my name even though he had met thousands of students by the time I graduated high school. I remember a trip to McDonalds with Mr. Rich and several other students when we won a citizenship award in elementary school; he made each of us feel so very special. I attended Holy Cross Lutheran with my Aunt and was always so happy if we ran into Mr. Rich when we were there because I got to see him as a Godly man and not just my Principal at school.
He knew that what he was doing for all of us was so important and it still shows up in all of the love and respect that so many of us have for him to this day! Thank you Mr.Rich for giving so much to us, you left quite a legacy in the hearts of your students!

Brian touched the hearts of many friends and family. He will be remembered as a kind, funny, and talented friend. He taught me how to make a lobster stand on his head, and carried two, not just one, lobster traps, and on different trips, from Maine to Colorado. We will always remember the good times and be thankful our paths crossed with Brian and Connie. ❤️

Mr. Rich had a sign in the gym. Winners never quit and quitters never win. Brian Rich was a winner and he was a daily model for all of us of what a winner looked like! Moreover, he desired for us to be winners too! I have so many wonderful memories of him it is hard to capture them all in one writing but I feel I must give it a go.
As a P.E. teacher Mr. Rich made fitness fun! Go You Chicken Fat Go! Tumbling, Rides on the Rope, Wally Ball Soccer, Hockey, Trampoline, Flag Football, Bombardment, Badmitton, Square Dancing and him giving us the "facts of life" were a few of my personal favorites. P.E. was a blast and we learned through his example to be fit, to be good sports, to give it a go, what a joy it was to be a member of a team, and the fundamentals we needed to compete as an individual. I didn't know as a child this "fun" I was having would impact my life in such a meaningful way. It led me to participate in High School Athletics and the scholarships I received allowed me to afford a fine education at Dana College in Blair Nebraska, Mr. Rich's almamater. This is where he met his wife, my dear friend Connie Snell Rich and coincidentally, I met the Love of my life Dennis Wayne South!
Mr. Rich was also our Science teacher and my 5th grade home room teacher. He taught us to use microscopes, was an excellent biology, earth science and physiology teacher. He taught Science so well that most of what I learned in Jr. High and High School was review! He also taught it in such a way that Science was hands on, interesting, fun and exciting! Remember 5th Outdoor education, a week long learning adventure in the mountains? Many of us were lucky enough to enjoy it as campers and later as a camp councilors! Beyond the great Science and leadership skills we learned, we were introduced to our future John Dewey classmates. One of my favorite memories of 5th grade and camp was when Mr. Rich would recite The Cremation of Sam McGee by heart!
I also remember the great lessons we learned preparing for and participating in the Science fair. I still think of Mr. Rich when I'm building bulletin boards or displays and am careful to get my lettering spot on!
Mr. Rich was the director of the Safety Patrol. What an honor it was to Strap on that Badge, stop the traffic and lead those little ones across the busy street! This memory always puts a big smile on my face!
Since my dad, Mr. Rich, and Mr.Kelly coached together they and their families became part of our family. I loved babysitting his children Brent and Laurie when the adults went out on Saturday nights after little league football! Little league Saturdays, Potlucks, Los Dos, Mama Mia's, Mickey's Inn, Bronco Sundays, Calzones, Smothered burritos, Thanksgivings, Christmas Eves, Lobster, Louis Lake, Roasted Marshmallows, Beaver Lakes Estates, My wedding, Honeymoon, and Alkeri cabin adventures all hold so many precious memories, I scarce can take it in.
When I think of the impact Mr. Rich had on me and my family and multiply that by all the other lives he touched and they in turn have touched, I remember that sign in the Valley View Gym and I know it's true! Winners Never Quit! Brian Rich, your legacy lives on. We were blessed to know you!

Dad was quite a character, always making us laugh and smile. I thought I’d share a few of the gems I captured over the years. Some of my best memories are the goofy ones.
