John O'Donnell

Obituary of John Richard O'Donnell

John passed away surrounded by his family on March 17, 2023.

John was born on June 17, 1939 in Idaho Springs, Colorado.  He was in the Navy Reserve during his Junior and Senior years of High School.  After graduation he reported to the USS Midway in Bremerton, Washington and worked on the flight deck. He was in the Navy four years before honorably discharged in 1959.

Upon his return, John worked for CDOT in maintenance and snow removal. He then had a long career in security at the Henderson MIne, Bullwackers Casino in Central City and Blackhawk, before retiring from Lockheed Martin in

John was a wonderful husband, father, Opa, and uncle to many grand children, great grand children and nieces and nephews. John loved to cook and help out in the kitchen... Thursday night spaghetti dinners. He made the best mountain coffee on camping/boating trips. He loved helping in the yard, including cutting back Oma’s dinner plate dahlias (thinking they were weeds).  He was a gentle giant who touched everyone with his kind and generous heart. When you had a conversation with John/Opa, you knew that he heard every word you said. He had a way of making you feel special.  He cared deeply about all of this family.

John is preceded by his parents (Emmet and Margaret), brothers (Tom, Emmet, Eddie), sister (Margaret Ann) and daughter Annette. He is survived by his wife Patty, children Randall Mayruee), AJ (Taryn) and Candice, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers during this time.

The family is grateful for the entire Western Hills Community that loved and cared for John. Their dedication to our family will always be treasured.
