George Horning

Obituary of George William Horning

George William Horning, age 88, passed away April 2, 2023, after contracting cancer a few months ago. He was born on February 13th, 1935 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1952. His undergraduate studies were at the University of Michigan, he acquired an engineering degree in 1957.  He finished his Master's Degree in Business Administration, in 1962, also at the University of Michigan.

George served in the U. S. Navy Active Reserves for nineteen months in 1958 and 1959. He was stationed in Yokosuka Japan and a member of the top secret security forces.

He worked for several different companies and corporations over a number of decades: Burrows, Mattel Toy Company, Johnson Tunnel - engineer, Douglas Aircraft, and Bank of the West in Denver.

George was a "Funcle" (fun uncle) to his nieces and nephews. He was quite a joker and enjoyed making puns.  Here are a few adjectives that describe him: playful, humorous, loving, compassionate, faithful, dedicated, loyal, and kind. His Golden Colorado home was open for visitors: many family members stayed overnight, for a week, perhaps months, and some stayed for more than a year. He was a great tour guide and would take his guests to many local areas of interest and unusual restaurants.

George's personal faith was important to him and he was an active member of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Lakewood for 38 years. He served as a deacon, elder, member of the mission committee, member of the facilities committee, participated in the men's bible study group, assisted in the setup of the annual craft show, donated food and supplies to homeless families, and went on mission trips. He was a Gideon member for many years and distributed Bibles to kids, hotels, and visited churches to share about the program.

Other than family and church, George was passionate about golfing, hiking, and biking. He was able to participate in those activities regularly up until a few months before his passing.

George is survived by Dorothy Horning, sister-in-law
