Obituary of Antoinette Adelaide Matthews

Antoinette “Nettie” Matthews (Gaiera), 94, of Longmont, CO passed away April 29, 2023. 

Antoinette was born on April 14, 1929, to Earnest and Maria Gaiera in Detroit, MI. After Antoinette graduated from Denby High School, she worked at Liberty Loan for many years. On May 5, 1962, Antoinette married Edmund Matthews and moved to Center Line, MI. Ed and Nettie had one child, Mary. 

Nettie worked in the Center Line school system as lunch lady, kitchen cook, recess Mom, field trip chaperone, and so much more. Nettie also worked in the deli for Kmart Corporation for many years before retiring. In 2013, Nettie moved to Longmont, CO to be near her daughter and grandchildren.

Nettie was devoted to her Catholic faith and belonged to the League of St. Jude. She enjoyed knitting, crafts, reading, and word searches. Nettie had a wonderful sense of humor and touched many hearts. 

Antoinette is survived by her daughter Mary Szettella (Steve), granddaughters Jade Mary Szettella and Lauryn Rose Szettella, and sister Livia Cerini. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Edmund, her parents Earnest and Maria, and her sister Isabella Varchetti. 

At Antoinette’s request, there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where an account has been established in Nettie’s name.
